Is it time for a New Mattress?

When choosing a mattress for your bedroom the most important fact to remember is that you are not just making a purchase, but you are making an investment for a number of years. Deciding on the right mattress can be a hard task as you want to ensure you are making the right decision and sometimes shops can bombard you and almost put pressure on you to purchase the best or most expensive mattress.

            What can feel like a cloud to one person can be back pain in the making for another and what makes the decision even harder is the sheer range of options, with mattresses available in practically every budget and type you can think of.

HOW DO I KNOW WHEN IT'S TIME FOR A NEW MATTRESS?

We've all heard the age-old statistic “we spend a third of our lives in bed” - and when that much time is dedicated to being laid in one place we need to make sure it’s comfortable. Your bedroom may have the latest fluffy peacock pillow, colour co-ordinated to your wallpaper and you may boast about how silky your pyjamas are; but you won't get a good night's sleep if your mattress perfect for you. If you're thinking that it might be time for a new mattress, you're probably right! Here are the signs to look out for to know the time to upgrade!

YOU'LL SLEEP in a dream IF YOUR MATTRESS IS a dream

It's massively important to pay attention to how you feel when you get into and out of bed as your mattress plays a huge role in how well you will sleep a night. Below you will see 4 questions, and dependant on your answers it could be time for a bedroom overhaul. Answer honestly and if any of the following points resonate with you, take out the old and bring in the new!

Just think; If you live until 75, you'll have spent 25 years in bed.

  1. Does your body relax once you settle down for the night in bed?
  2. Do you look forward to retreating to bed for the night?
  3. Do you find yourself waking during the night and not knowing why?
  4. Do you wake in pain or uncomfortable in the morning?

If your ANSWER contradicts the desired answer and has made you think “Oh I wish I slept through the night” then the chances are you need to take the leap and purchase a new mattress. If at this time a new mattress isn’t achievable even just a comfy mattress topper could help solve 1, if not all of your problems for a short term solution.

When is the right time to change your mattress?

It is recommended by The National Bed Federation to change your mattress every 7-10 years dependant on the quality and condition however it does all come down to the way you look after and care for your mattress. The best way too look at it, after 8 years, your mattress has had over 22,000 hours of sleep, sweat and dead skin cells imprinted into so even if it feels as comfortable as the first day you bought it, it could be hygienic to change.

  The first tell-tale signs are;

  • You sleep better in other beds
  • Realising you don’t sleep as well as in previous months
  • You start to wake up with stiffness or pain

Just remember a mattress that’s right for you and not worn out will mean you move about less, awaken less and are less disturbed by your partner. You’re also less likely to wake up feeling groggy or with any aches or pains.

What are the different mattress types?

The 2 main types of mattresses are Pocket Sprung and Memory Foam. They each have different qualities, and all depends on your own personal preference;

  • Pocket Sprung – this is the most traditional type of mattress and has a bouncy springy feel. This is due to the individual fabric and spring pockets that are available with different levels of tension and comfort.
  • Memory Foam – this is the newest trend and is quickly becoming very popular. The mattress is designed to mould to the shape of your body which means you are less likely to disturb your partner when you move.

When choosing a mattress for you, there is no right or wrong answer as it all depends on your own personal preference. Some stores advise you if you would be better suited to a soft, medium or firm mattress but in reality, the best thing to do is lie down and get comfortable in the position you would usually sleep.

When testing different mattress don’t just try a range of soft mattresses with perhaps open spring and layers of memory foam, try a variety.

The truth is, only YOU can decide the best mattress for you. Stores, blogs and shop assistants can offer advice and guide you in the right direction but in reality the best thing to do is lie on a variety for a few minutes at a time and find the one you feel most relaxed on!
