The Guide to Making Hot Summer Nights a Thing of the Past…

It’s no secret that us Brits complain we’re too cold in the Winter and again complain we are too hot in the Summer, here at The Bedroom Shop we are all guilty of this. We have all experienced irritatingly hot nights where we feel more like a piece of steak on a flaming BBQ than a human trying to rest for the next day and that’s before we even hop into bed, all be it alone or with our bed buddies.

We lie silently praying for the world’s most powerful Dyson fan to magically appear in our bedrooms or for an Antarctica Blizzard to sweep through the room whilst secretly knowing things are only about to get worse as the night goes on. We may complain for days but do we really have to put up and shut up?

The answer is NO! The Bedroom Shop team have put together several ways, all of which we have detailed below, that you can use to help deal with the heat and we are here to provide you with the ability to sleep comfortably and peacefully, so you are fully re-charged for the day ahead.

Start as you mean to go on…

There is no point to hop into bed at 10pm and expect to already be cool as the bed has not been touched since you left for work at 8am. This will not work! Ask yourself one question… Have the blinds or curtains been open all day? If the answer is yes, like everyone at The Bedroom Shop HQ, then your room has in theory been cooking in the heat all day. So add a little simple step to your morning routine and close those blinds or curtains. It is a simple trick that our neighbours in Spain, Portugal & Italy have been using for centuries and it can help reduce the temperature in your home drastically.

Also keep those windows slightly ajar so your home is still secure but also so a steady flow of air can be circulating all day. Keep all interior doors almost closed, not fully, so rooms can be kept cool but cool air circulating throughout the house. During the evening this is where to keep your windows fully open, once the temperature drops, to hopefully allow all hot air to exit and a cool air flow throughout.

Keeping the bed simple…

Throughout the year seasons change, as do our wardrobes, so why do you keep your bed accessories the same? The simplest and easiest step to take first is to swap your duvet for a thinner sheet or smaller tog size duvet. The Bedroom Shop has a wide range of duvets, all with different thickness/TOG levels to make it easier to finding the perfect summer winter/contrast. This will still keep you protected from the bed monsters but not be as heavy on your body and allow your body to breathe. You could also introduce a cooling mattress pad which you can use for either your head or body. They work by transferring heat to other parts of the mat your body isn’t touching and you can even pop into the freezer to provide extra cooling.

Believe it or not the material you sleep on can play a huge part in keeping you cool. Investing in pricier bedding usually means the quality of fabric is better and can breathe more. Just think if you sweat all night it’s got to go somewhere and the more expensive fabrics are designed to breathe to prevent this from being unusable.

Enjoy the cooler side…

It is most probably the first step we all take but flipping the pillow can provide an instant moment of cool, all be it not for very long, but what if we told you of a handy trick to keep it cool. All you need are 2 resealable sandwich bags; 1st step is to fill 1 sandwich bag with water and pop into the freezer. Once frozen place inside the second so both seals are at opposite ends (this is to prevent water leaking out). Place inside your pillowcase and on the bed face down and this can provide long lasting cool cushions.  At The Bedroom Shop, we also have a wide range of different quality pillows ranging from thin budget pillows to thick cooling memory foam.

Easy routine changes…

The Bedroom Shop team have put together some simple steps you can take at home to keep yourself cooler include;

  • Taking a cool shower before bed – Avoid a hot bath before bed as it can take a few hours for your body to cool down.
  • Exercise earlier – Don’t do intense exercise in the few hours leading to bedtime as it can lead to you feeling hot and sticky in bed
  • Eat earlier – Don’t eat your biggest meal of the day late in the evening as digesting food can raise body temperature.
  • Cool your sheets – Place your pillowcases or sheets in a bag in the freezer. This may seem odd but it can provide an instant cooling whilst you drift off.

Crafty little tricks…

Along with some easy routine changes our HQ team at The Bedroom Shop have also put together a number of Cooling Crafty tricks that you may be able to take advantage of. The first being ‘The Ice Cooler’ which is a simple step you can use with assistance of a fan. All you need to do is to fill a fairly large container of ice with a fan over the top. This will help to circulate cold air or blow cold air directly onto you. The final crafty trick to the Ice Cooler is to blow cold air directly out of your window to contrast hot humid air. Just like they do at the supermarkets to keep the warm air in!

The second cooling craft trick is to simply sleep in your gorgeous birthday suit! Yes that’s right just sleep completely naked and if feeling brave enough with no sheet. You will be surprised how liberating and free you feel whilst also sleeping extremely cool.

Our final Cooling Crafty trick and then end of our blog is the famous and ever popular ‘Egyptian Method’. Egyptians used the simple but effective trick due to the soaring desert temperatures. Take 2 towels, preferably pre-used as they hold water more effectively, and soak one in water. Place the second dry towel under your body and the wet towel on top of you. This will keep you cool but also your bed dry. This trick can also be modernised by using a wet t-shirt and wearing this to bed.
